About Corey Sharpe

Where do we get our beliefs? Three theological perspectives have significantly shaped my Christian identity: Evangelicalism, the early Methodist tradition and liberation theology. From my coming to faith in a Baptist church and throughout my education in a Baptist school and college, I was nurtured by convictions that emphasized a spiritual rebirth, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the centrality of the Bible. Even when I disagree with certain aspects of evangelicalism, it has deeply influenced my sense of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. My seminary studies spawned my interest in early Methodism, particularly its approach to spiritual formation. Its leaders were convinced that only a foundation of doctrine and discipline would lead to a meaningful transformation of the heart and mind. In other words, having the mind of Christ enables me to be more like Christ. Life in a suburban culture obscures the increasing gap between the poor and rich, as well as the Bible’s close identification with the poor. My doctoral work in socio-cultural context exposed me to liberation theology, which helps me see redemptive history as a history of oppressed groups, written from the perspective of the powerless, about a God who is actively involved with the poor in their struggles. I am now the pastor at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in St Mary’s County, Maryland. Together my wife and I have 4 children.

How Can We Make Credible Statements About God?

“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them” (Romans 1:19). According to much of the world, God (if he even exists) is distant and unknowable.  Human reason is the only … Continue reading

Should Christians Be Snake Charmers?

“…they will pick up serpents with their hands” (Mark 16:18).  After all, it is in the Bible.  Some congregations, following the commands of Christ, have incorporated snake handling into their worship services.  Is it possible that Jesus instituted this practice … Continue reading

Why aren’t the Men in Church?

My experience as a pastor and a parishioner tells me that women tend to be more active in the church than men. Certainly there are exceptions, but usually women vastly outnumber the men in their congregations. Why is this? Men, … Continue reading

Narnia and Middle Earth: The Movie

You have probably heard the name C.S. Lewis, the author of the Chronicles of Narnia book series and the inspiration behind the movie sequel.  The Screwtape Letters and The Space Trilogy are also good fiction reads.  But there is more … Continue reading

Is God Close-minded? (part 3)

If God really loves the world, why did He provide only one way to redeem it?   I believe God is perfect love and justice, therefore I believe God will show love and justice to all people, regardless of their beliefs.  … Continue reading

Should Christians Try to Convert Others? (part two)

I don’t see anything wrong with Christians trying to convert other people. There is, of course, Christ’s command to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth.  But I think there is more we can say: If you think … Continue reading

Did Jesus Teach the Only True Faith? (part one)

That is what Jesus seemed to be saying, which is disturbing in our pluralistic society — even for many  Christians.  Many believe instead that all religions are like paths on a mountain — they all eventually lead to the same … Continue reading

Ten Commandments on Government Property?

There are so many lawsuits and appeals related to the display of anything religious (Ten Commandments monuments, crosses, nativity scenes) on public property.  An incredible amount of time, energy and money are spent on these legal battles.   Should this matter … Continue reading
